An individual’s own fat can be used as an almost limitless filler material to help provide fullness or enlargement of areas as well as to correct contour irregularities. Fat injections (also called lipofilling) can be used to create fuller lips, level out depressed scars, fill out areas of excess fat removal resulting from a previous liposuction, address facial creases and augment and contour various facial and body areas. It has become particularly very popular in the face to treat the facial atrophy that often goes along with aging. Lipofilling as an ancillary technique in breast reconstruction has resulted in the ability to obtained far better results with greater precision and predictability than ever before.
Treatment Using Fat Injections
Treatment by fat injection may be a minor procedure that can be done under local anesthesia with or without sedation depending on the extent of the area(s) to be addressed. During the fat transfer procedure, liposuction is used to remove the fat from various areas of the body. This fat is then processed and injected into the desired areas.
Not all of the fat that is transplanted into the targeted area will survive. Most patients require more than one fat transfer treatment in order to achieve optimal results.
