Over time, stress, aging, genetic and environmental factors can greatly impact the appearance of the skin making it look wrinkled, dull and tired. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Turkeltaub provides BOTOX® treatments which can reduce or eliminate facial wrinkles and creases that are a consequence of active facial expressions. The result is a smoother more youthful appearance.

What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is prepared from a purified protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The protein exerts its effect by preventing the release of a chemical from nerve endings that would normally cause muscle fiber contraction. The end result is muscle relaxation/paralysis. In the face, this leads to the improvement of “dynamic” skin crease lines related to the underlying muscles. After receiving BOTOX® injections, patients can smile, frown and even look surprised without forming deep creases or wrinkles. The result is a smoother, pleasant, and more youthful appearance.

Where Can BOTOX® be Used?

BOTOX® injections are used most often to treat facial creases and wrinkles such as crow’s feet area, frown lines and forehead folds. However, the treatment does not work for “static” wrinkles that are caused by aging and sun damage. Less commonly, BOTOX® can be employed to make minor adjustments to the shape and positioning of the eyebrows and lips.

Severe sweating of the palms or underarms can be reduced with BOTOX®. The injections temporarily block the nerves that stimulate sweating, leaving the palms or underarms much drier. Results from BOTOX® typically last for about six months. It should not be used during pregnancy, while breast feeding or when certain neurological diseases are present.

Treatment with BOTOX®

Treatment involves the precise injection of minute quantities of BOTOX® into the desired areas of the skin. Temporary redness and swelling may develop at the injection sites which can easily be concealed with makeup. Normal activities can be resumed within a few hours of receiving the injection treatment. BOTOX® injections can be combined with Juvederm® injections or any other skin procedure.

Results from BOTOX®

Response from BOTOX® injections is usually seen within 4-5 days; however, the full effect takes approximately 21 days. If the expected results are not seen by one month, consideration can be given for a supplemental treatment. The effects may last around three to four months at which time another treatment can be administered. Some studies have shown that with repeated injections, BOTOX® results may last longer.

Generally, BOTOX® patients experience a softening or elimination of the underlying muscle’s effect on the skin. Creases and wrinkles may disappear or diminish in degree. The injections can allow patients to obtain outcomes that in the past would have required surgery and the considerable associated downtime.

Side effects other than bruising are uncommon and depend to some extent on the areas treated. These include headache, nausea, flu syndrome, respiratory infection and temporary eyelid droop.

A Message Regarding Coronavirus/COVID-19

In light of the coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, we would like to let you know of some of the major precautions we are taking in our office to maximize cleanliness and keep the environment as sanitary and safe as possible. Our highest priority is always to ensure the safety of every individual who sees us and we are taking extreme infection-control measures to maintain cleanliness and “sterility” of surfaces and the overall environment.

We will be limiting dates and times for office appointments and consultations due to safety and other issues. Consequently, if you have already made an office appointment or consultation prior to March 18, 2020 to occur at a later time, this may need to be changed.

For anyone considering plastic surgery, we are now offering Virtual Consultations and Telemedicine through Skype. A great number of aesthetic or insurance-related issues can be evaluated via pictures and online video conferencing, making this an excellent way to find out more about particular procedures, determine candidacy for treatment, receive answers to questions and facilitate being able to move forward with care once the government lifts all restrictions.

In an abundance of caution, we are asking all current patients who are experiencing a fever, cough, chills, fatigue or any type of respiratory illness to please delay any upcoming appointments at our practice. We can talk with you by phone or email to establish a new date and time for the appointment.

We are all in this together. Our team urges everyone to follow the guidelines recommended by local health authorities and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which include frequent handwashing for a minimum of 20 seconds, social distancing, staying home if you are feeling sick, and contacting your healthcare provider if you feel you are experiencing symptoms.
