What is Xeomin®?
Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) is a botulinum neurotoxin A, similar in nature to Botox® and Dysport®, that can temporarily reduce the appearance or extent of dynamic facial crease lines resulting in a more youthful, relaxed and refreshed look. It is the newest option available in the treatment of these facial wrinkles and may offer a less expensive alternative.
Though Xeomin® has been available in numerous countries worldwide since 2005, it was just approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August 2011. Dr. Steven H. Turkeltaub is one of only a handful of physicians in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area to be chosen by Xeomin’s® distributor, Merz Aesthetics, to offer this exciting new treatment before its widespread release some time in 2012.
With Xeomin® injections, you can obtain some cosmetic facial enhancement without invasive surgery or long recovery times.
Where Can Xeomin® be Used?
Xeomin® can be used to treat all the same areas as BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®. However, like these other products as well, some of the applications are considered off label (not directly approved by the FDA). The most common requested and treated areas are the frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead creases and the crow’s feet. It can also be used to address hyperhidrosis (excess sweating) of the armpits.
Treatment with Xeomin®
Treatment of the affected areas with Xeomin® entails injecting minute amounts precisely at preselected points using an ultra-fine needle. There may be some very brief redness which can be easily camouflaged with makeup. There is typically no downtime typically necessary and you should be able to return to your normal daily routine immediately after the procedure.
It is recommended to try to avoid blood thinners for around 2 weeks prior to treatment as this can minimize bruising. This includes such products as aspirin, Motrin, Advil, Aleve and ibuprofen.
Results from Xeomin®
The initial response to Xeomin® is usually seen within 3 – 5 days though it may take around two weeks or more to see the maximal effect. This is essentially identical to both BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport®. Unfortunately, this is where the similarities end. Whereas the duration of effect of BOTOX® is around three to four months in most patients, we have discovered in our brief usage of Xeomin® that its effectiveness uniformly lasts only around six to seven weeks at which point there is essentially full return of muscle function.
We find this outcome unacceptable even though it has been offered at a substantial discount to the price of BOTOX®. As a result, we will no longer be offering Xeomin®.
