Juvederm® and Restylane®
As part of the natural progression of facial aging, skin wrinkles and creases form and atrophy of the soft tissues occurs with loss of the firmness and contours of youth. Although there are many different options available, injectable agents such as Juvederm®, Restylane®, Radiesse® and one’s own fat are among the most popular choices and provide highly-effective treatment options for these problems. These same soft tissue fillers can also be used for augmentation of the lips and other areas of the face as well as for treatment of depressed scars. Injectable Fillers: Juvederm® and Restylane®
Hyaluronic acid is a vital, naturally occurring substance present in large quantities throughout the body. Among its effects, this substance provides the fullness, resilience, and suppleness of our skin. As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the body decreases, resulting in the loss of shape and volume and the appearance of lines and wrinkles. In order to combat these visible signs of aging, our practice offers Juvederm® and Restylane®. These soft tissue fillers consist of safe hyaluronic acid based gels that help to restore or obtain the volume and contours desired.
Treatment with Juvederm® and Restylane®
To provide maximum comfort, a topical anesthetic and nerve block has often employed resulting in an essentially pain free experience. The Juvederm® or Restylane® is then precisely injected using a thin needle into the desired areas, imparting fullness. With the introduction of Juvederm® XC, a new formulation that contains a local anesthetic, Dr. Turkeltaub has found little need for a nerve block for these patients.
There will be some variable swelling which usually subsides within 24 to 48 hours. Makeup can be applied immediately if desired and there is no restriction of activities. This is why these are called “lunchtime” procedures. Treatment is sometimes combined with BOTOX® for optimum results.
Juvederm® and Restylane® can be used essentially anywhere on the face where there are creases and wrinkles as well as where there is a desire for increased volume and contour changes. Commonly treated areas include the lips, chin, cheeks, brows and the creases around the mouth and between the brows. The results from these fillers generally last approximately three to nine months and are affected by several factors. There are some differences between the products which can be advantageous in certain situations.
