Breast Augmentation (Breast Enlargement)
Breast Augmentation is the surgical procedure that is used to enlarge a woman's breasts and improve their shape. It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures at our Arizona plastic surgery center and has an extremely high satisfaction rate. Surgery involves the insertion of either silicone or saline breast implants to obtain the desired enlargement. The implants consist of an outer envelope of silicone rubber that is filled with either silicone or saline.
There are a variety of options available that should be considered prior to breast augmentation surgery including:

- 1. Fill material - silicone or saline.
- 2. Location of the incision
- (a) lower breast crease
- (b) lower half of the nipple
- (c) in the armpit
- 3. Site of breast implant placement:
- (a) directly behind the breast tissue and in front of the chest
wall muscle - (b) behind the chest wall muscle (pectoralis major)
- 4. Implant size
- 5. Projection style - width to projection relationships
- (a) moderate profile
- (b) high profile
- (c) low profile
6. Shape of the implant
- 7. Surface type - smooth or textured
- Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that is most often performed under general anesthesia. This approach is very safe and much more comfortable than a "twilight" or semi-awake type of anesthetic. The restrictions and regimen postoperatively vary from physician to physician.
The long-term benefits realized from breast augmentation are multiple and significant. Included among these are looking better, feeling more attractive, having greater self-esteem and being able to find clothes that fit and that are more complimentary.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
A Breast Lift is another breast enhancement option that Dr. Turkeltaub offers at his Scottsdale and Glendale-based practice. This surgery is designed to correct breasts that are droopy due to aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss. A breast lift involves the reshaping of the breast tissue, tightening of the skin, reduction of the nipple size, and elevation of the nipple to a higher, more natural position.
There are a variety of procedures that can accomplish this result. Which one would be the best for you would depend on many factors including the extent of drooping, amount of excess skin, nipple position and physician choice. The incisions can range from a limited one around the top of the areola or around the entire areola, to one that extends from around the areola to the crease at the lower part of the breast then along this crease in an inverted-T shape.
Most women elect to have a breast lift combined with a breast augmentation. The breast implants not only enlarge the breasts but can also create a fuller shape, improved cleavage, and a more youthful appearance.

Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)
Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty) is a very effective and successful breast enhancement procedure for women with large breasts. Extremely large breasts frequently are associated with neck, back, and shoulder pain, skin irritation and grooving of the shoulders from bra straps. There is often a significant restriction in physical activities due to the associated discomfort. Finding properly fitting bras and clothes can be a daunting task.
Breast reduction surgery involves decreasing the breast size by removing excess skin and breast tissue and re-contouring and elevating the remainder of the breast. The nipple area is reduced in size and elevated to a more natural position. Incisions are in the shape of an inverted T, extending from around the nipple, down to the crease at the bottom of the breast and then along the crease.
Breast reduction surgery is usually done as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. The postoperative discomfort is quite tolerable and well controlled with pain medication.
Many women with large breast find that breast reduction surgery can resolve most, if not all, of their symptoms. In fact, they are among the happiest, most satisfied, and most appreciative of our patients.
If you are interested in a breast reduction or another type of breast enhancement surgery, you can schedule an appointment at our Scottsdale or Glendale office.
Breast Reconstruction
Breast Reconstruction is usually performed to reconstruct a breast that has been removed due to cancer. There are a variety of techniques that can be employed including:
1. Insertion of breast implants
2. Placement of tissue expanders. These are temporary implants that are inflated over a period of time, stretching out the skin as well as promoting new skin growth. This is then followed by the insertion of permanent implants.
3. Flaps. This involves the transfer of tissue from other areas such as the abdomen, back or buttocks. These types of procedures entail greater risks, including failure and the frequent need for revisions.
Breast reconstruction can be done either immediately at the time of the mastectomy or at a later date. Depending on the technique for reconstruction as well as the patient's goals (such as the desire for later nipple-areola reconstruction), one to several procedures may be necessary in order to obtain the "final" result. There are a variety of approaches available to reconstruct a new nipple.
